PUB MARKETS

The Fringe Markets

Where can you grab a beer with your bargains in Sydney? Jodie McLeod finds out.

Ahh, the markets. Where else can you find that sweet triad of weekend treats — great bargains, gourmet coffee and gözleme — all in the one place? But just when you thought a day at the markets couldn’t get any better, a number of local Sydney masterminds have thrown another ingredient into the market mix: beer.

Pub-based markets are the latest bargain-shopping hot spots to etch onto your weekend “to do” list. You might not be able to get around to all these markets in one weekend but then rushing is not the idea, anyway. Take your time and have a tipple as you browse the trash and treasure.

Start your pub market crawl on Saturday at The Fringe Markets for an aperitif of emerging fashion designers and a chaser of vintage clothing and jewellery. Strewn with 30 stalls full of some of the most up-to-the-minute Sydney fashion around, market day at The Fringe has a bar looking like your coolest friend’s living room, which seems appropriate to explore only while sipping a French martini.

After your Paddington fashion fix, mosey on over to Newtown for the Marly Markets at the Marlborough Hotel (on the first Saturday of every month). Chill in the beer garden in between your bargain hunts through the clothes, art and crafts on offer here.

When Sunday comes around, head to Coogee for the Palace Community Market held on the rooftop of the Beach Palace Hotel on the first and third Saturday of each month, starting from September 2009. Then make your way to Kings Cross for Radio Social (every Sunday) at The World Bar. This little Sunday session — complete with music, a fundraising barbecue and stalls by emerging designers Spunky Bruiser, Our Mish Mash, I Love Dust and Rock Block — is run by indie radio station FBI. We could certainly forgo the coffee and gözleme when there’s a bargain shopping spree, a barbie and a boogie to be had!
