Just when you thought King Street in Newtown couldn’t possibly squeeze in another retro clothing retailer, the Red Cross elbows in with 359 King. And we will gladly make room, as this quaint little shop fills a gap in the pre-loved fashion market selling a unique combination of gorgeous retro get-ups plucked from clothing bins around Australia and new fashion and accessories with all proceeds going to Red Cross charity programs. The kitschy decor and original wartime Red Cross posters set the mood for trying on all manner of dresses ($20–$35), tops ($15–$30), skirts ($20–$35) and shoes from the 1960s onwards. Men will find retro shirts, trousers and fedoras ranging from $15 to $50. Clearly, prices lean towards those of a humble charity store than an “exy” vintage shop, especially on the three-for-$20 rack. And you read it right — there’s also new stock here (excess and past season) sourced from Australian brands and sold at one-third the retail price. Shoppers have been known to pick up a Country Road or even a Mimco leather handbag. Just another reason to get your fill of fashion here.
