Old, new, stylish, cool, revolting, daggy and hilarious are all words that owner of Pigeon Ground, Tim, would use to describe his store’s style. “It’s vintage with a bit of fun, not bogged down in couture,” he says. This quaint little shop, tucked away a few blocks back from the ruckus of King Street in Newtown, is a goldmine of vintage goodies. The shop name gives a pretty good hint as to what’s inside: a charming combination of vintage records, clothing and unique knick-knacks underpinned with a great sense of humour. The clothing for men and women dates from the 1940s to the 1980s, and all pieces are handpicked for their “fit” into the Pigeon Ground ethos. When we last visited, we spotted scarlet vintage woollen nurses capes for $20 — how’s that for a statement fashion piece? For men, a collection of vintage military jackets saluted at us all in a row, priced between $30 and $50. The store also stocks some new clothing by local designers, including Secret Squirrel. You’ll also find second-hand books, jewellery and handbags. If your sense of humour is tuned in, you’ll love this place.
